Although “[a] person of ordinary skill in the art is also a person of ordinary creativity, not an automaton,” KSR 550 at 421, there may be limits in a particular case as to how much gap-filling may be based on such creativity. See Arendi S.A.R.L. v. Apple Inc., 832 F.3d 1355, 1361–63 (Fed. Cir. 2016). As stated in Arendi: 

Though less common, in appropriate circumstances, a patent can be obvious in light of a single prior art reference if it would have been obvious to modify that reference to arrive at the patented invention. Here, the Examiner has not sufficiently identified supporting evidence why one of ordinary skill in the art would, based on the teaching or suggestion of Cerrelli, add a physical connection via a USB cable while still utilizing the wireless connection to transfer data between the host device and the SSD device.
